The Lab is a year-round, open-access inclusive artist development programme led by Candoco Dance Company. It supports and connects a new generation of D/deaf, disabled and neurodivergent emerging dance artists aged 18–30.

Bringing together dance artists, creatives and mentors, The Lab is both a development programme and a creative community – a space to experiment, learn and grow alongside others. Through a combination of online and in-person activity, participants are supported to:

  • Develop their creative and choreographic practice.
  • Build industry networks and professional connections.
  • Be part of a peer community to share practice and offer mutual support.

Co-designed with its participants, The Lab places disabled voices at its centre and creates meaningful pathways for the next generation of disabled dance leaders.

What to Expect

Launching in August 2026, the first pilot year of The Lab will include:

  • Regular online sessions.
Led by the Candoco team, guest artists and sector professionals, these sessions offer insights into the dance ecosystem, practical tools for navigating the industry as a D/deaf, disabled or neurodivergent artist, and space for creative exploration and exchange.
  • Open Studio.
A regular facilitated space for creative exploration, experimentation and collaboration with peers, supported by lead artists and the Candoco team.
  • Weekend Intensives.
In-person workshops introducing a range of creative and choreographic approaches, co-designed with participants to reflect their interests, access needs and ambitions.
