Vietnam Choreographic Residency
2013
In September 2013, Candoco Artists Kate Marsh and Company Dancers Victoria Malin and Andrew Graham worked with a group of 12 local young people for a 10 day choreographic residency.
Participants came together from various settings; some with previous dance experience and others with none.In collaboration with the Candoco facilitators, the group created a piece which was performed as a curtain raiser to Candoco’s double bill performance of Three Acts of Play at the Hanoi Opera House.
During their visit to Hanoi, Artistic Co-Director Pedro Machado, Candoco Artist Kate Marsh and Company Dancer Dan Daw appeared on an episode of ‘Talk Vietnam,’ discussing Candoco’s presence and work in Vietnam.
The process is a collaboration. We didn’t go in and tell the dancers and artists how to move or what to do. We used several different tasks and exercises to encourage them to create the material.
I hope that in the future there’ll be more programs like this to assist the disabled in discovering more about themselves and to assure them that they too have the ability to do different things.
I feel more relaxed inside, I can do what I like and not feel confined to any one dancing style.
