From Practice to Presence with Kate Scanlan
From Practice to Presence with Kate Scanlan
Defining who you are as an artist and how the world sees you.
What do you want to say through your work, and how do you tell people about it? In this 90-minute interactive session, Kate invites artists at all stages of their career to step back and look at themselves as both creator and business. Because in dance, you are the business.
The session opens with Kate sharing their own work and professional journey: the turning points, the challenges, and the lessons learned along the way. From there, we move into the practical side of the business of dance, exploring how to define your artistic identity and communicate it with clarity and confidence, and develop the career you want.
Together, we’ll practise how you’d introduce your work to someone who’s never seen it: a short, honest way of saying who you are and what your practice is about. You’ll also hear three key pieces of advice Kate wishes they’d been given at the start of their career.
To keep the momentum going, you’ll leave with a small practical action plan: refine your introduction and try it out on real people, identify a handful of people and organisations you’d like to connect with, and name the opportunities you want to work towards next, with a first step to get you there.
