In memory of Mickaella Dantas

Candoco Dance Company
A beautifully crafted tribute by Dorothy Allen-Pickard, celebrating Mickaella's incredible dancing, words and spirit.

Following the passing of our beloved Mickaella Dantas in early 2024, we supported filmmaker Dorothy Allen-Pickard in editing a special interview with Micka using behind-the-scenes content filmed during the making of the short documentary Material Bodies. We share this beautiful interview as a tribute to Mickaella, an extraordinary dancer whose beauty and talent left an indelible mark on Candoco Dance Company. We hope it offers a glimpse into her remarkable spirit, serving as a living memory of her artistry and grace.

“Mickaella radiates here; her humour, her timing, her honesty, and her steadfast commitment to investigating dance and its powers.

A poet of body and words.

Eternal friendship dearest Micka.”

Olivia Edginton (Mickaella’s friend and former company Dancer during Micka’s time)

“I had the great fortune of collaborating with Micka on a short dance documentary, Material Bodies, in 2020. She was brilliantly inventive, playful and up for exploring ideas in all different directions, through dance and discussion. All it would take was one small prompt and she’d be off, interacting and experimenting with whatever surface, idea, or person was presented to her. As is often the way with filmmaking, we were only able to include a fraction of what Micka said in the final film. So this new edit takes material that wasn’t included in Material Bodies and gives us the chance to listen to more of Mika’s poetic, surprising and beautiful reflections on her experience as a woman and a dancer.”
