Billy Gigurtsis

With a background in cybersecurity, and a body shaped by scoliosis, he brings a unique perspective to the world of contemporary performance. His practice began with poetry and has evolved to encompass durational performance, contemporary dance, and interdisciplinary choreography. It is deeply informed by theory, especially systems theory, complex systems science, and phenomenology.
A graduate of the NEXT Choreography course at Siobhan Davies Studios, Billy has shown work and performed at venues around the world including Riposte, Siobhan Davies Studios, Västerås Konserthus, and Woolwich Works. He has worked with Candoco before as a dance artist, performing with Anna Seymour and ShareMusic Sweden. He has extensive experience and training in expressionist styles such as Tanztheater and Butoh.
Billy understands choreography as the act of making a choice – which includes the choice to make no choice. His practice investigates how different disciplines make choices when creating work, and how these learnings can be applied in an interdisciplinary context to dance and performance. He brings this perspective to his teaching practice, seeking to help students explore and understand how different disciplines can inform their own decision making processes when improvising and creating work.
