Tea with Flo and Kerry

Candoco Dance Company, January 19th, 2018
This week Flo meets with Administrator Kerry over a cup of green tea.

Hi tea drinkers! This week’s selected Candocan is our administrator, Kerry. Let’s see what she has to say over a cuppa.

Q1: How do you like your tea?

A: I like green tea. I am not a milk person and I barely drink tea so I’m all about the green stuff. –are you more of a coffee person then? Nooo, I’m more of a water person, that’s how boring I am, I drink water as opposed to coffee or tea! –it is really good for your health though, at least you aren’t a caffeine addict!

Q2: What is the most stressful task you have had to do in this job recently?

A: There are new laws coming this year which I’m having to make sure that the company is compliant with. It is quite a big responsibility and it’s quite stressful. But ermm, I don’t really know… I wouldn’t say that my job is particularly stressful, as such. I just need to make sure that everyone is supported as much as I can, that everyone is hitting deadlines. But yeah, the law thing is quite stressful. –I can imagine!

Q3: What is the most satisfying thing you have had to do recently?

-You can go back before Christmas because two weeks ago you were probably eating turkey.

A: I was, I was. Erm, the most satisfying thing… Probably… Oh! I got to decorate the office with Christmas decorations, which was awesome. What else? I’ve been working on our 25 stories collection, which I started when I began the job as the Digital Comms person and I’m now carrying on as administrator. That’s really satisfying. We’re nearly at the end of the 25 Stories finally and it’s a really interesting way to learn about everyone who’s worked with the company, the history of the company, the personal investment that people have put in as well. I feel like I really know the company from the inside out now. Doing that has been massively satisfying.

Q4: Savoury or sweet?

A: Oh I’m all about sweet - All about sweet? I like it.

Q5: How long have you been doing your job?

A: I’ve been doing my current job since the end of September 2017, but I’ve actually been with the company since September 2016, when I started as the Digital Communications Coordinator covering for Lucy’s maternity leave. I just wouldn’t leave! I just stayed on as Administrator, and that’s how I’m here now.

Q6: What is your favourite colour?

A: Oh that’s hard! Mmm, I’m very into yellow at the moment, annnd… there’s been a lot of red around this year, I’m a big fan of red. And black is my staple, love a bit of black. –classic.

Q7: If you could try out another role in the company, which one would you choose?

A: Company dancer. Without a doubt. I mean, I have absolutely zero dance training but if I did, I’d be one of the company dancers because it would be incredible. I love watching them in rehearsals, I love watching them teach and perform. I can’t imagine a more fun and creative job. And they’re such a close team, everything they do looks joyous.

Q8: Television or Books?

A: Books.

Q9: 17 words explaining your role and what is takes to do it.

A: SEVENTEEN??? –yeah… Right. Okay. I can do this. Ermmmmmmmm…

Communications – finance – information – support – tea making – office decorating – tea break chatting – spreading the love of Candoco – YAY –

Yay is my last word.

Q10: If you could be any dancer in any work ever done by Candoco, who would you be?

A: Oh I don’t know…-she clicks her nails on her cup of tea. That’s a really tricky one. –more clicking. It’s really tricky trying to choose one piece when you have so many that are so different and you love them all for vary different reasons… I’m very into Face In at the moment, the newest work. I think it’s very out there and I love the direction that we’ve gone with the new piece. I really love Olivia in this. I feel like, whatever she’s got going on, it’s completely sort of chaotic and wild and free. It looks incredibly liberating, energetic, and fun to be doing what she’s doing. Obviously, it’s a very personal piece so if were to perform it, it would probably be very different. I’m also a real sucker for You and I Know. I’ve probably seen it about eight times and I cry every time! I would probably want to be Laura...to fall in love with a rock star and be carried around, and then be really feisty and start smashing tables and stuff. Yeah, I think that would be fun, being the cool, feisty woman of Candoco!

Q11: What is your favourite season?

A: Oh, probably autumn because it’s colourful. But I really loved last summer when it was really hot. We have some nice parks around the office so I just spent quite a lot of my lunch breaks going out, getting a tan and drinking gin… after work. – Glad we clarified that up Kerry… So yeah probably late summer, early autumn, it’s my time, before it gets too cold and the office is freezing. –tell me about it…

Q12: What did you enjoy doing the most this week?

A: Mmm. We’re only just back from Christmas so it’s kind of getting into the swing of things, catching up with the people. It’s always really fun learning what people did over Christmas, hearing about the tour that we have just done in Paris. That’s probably been the most interesting. I’m trying to put off all the big tasks because it’s all a bit overwhelming after Christmas! And like I said, looking into new laws is not something you want to be doing first thing... Eating all the leftover chocolate gifts that we have - that’s probably going to be the bit I enjoy most.

Q13: What are three things people remember you for?

A: Oh my *in a squeaky voice* this is so haaaaaaard…… HOPEFULLY, being helpful...probably that I am a bit weird?! Weird, helpful...I need a third thing. What is my third thing? Mmm… -drinks gin?- Drinks gin. Doesn’t drink tea. Haha, yeah let’s just go with that. –you realise that’s going to be on the website, yeah? Everyone knows, haha.

Q14: Christmas or your birthday?

A: Oh Christmas. I love Christmas.Spending time with my family, and we always have a nice atmosphere in the office. I’m not really that bothered about my birthday but I love Christmas and bringing people together. Buying gifts for other people actually, I really love it. –Stressful though?- No, I really enjoy it! I start buying gifts in about October, I’m one of those weird people. -you’re organised! I love buying presents, but after Christmas I never know what to do with myself. I’m in this big sort of gift-less vacuum, thinking, "I WANT TO BUY PRESENTS BUT I CAN’T!" So, then I buy stuff for myself... –Good. Treat yourself.

Q15: Dancing at a ball or dancing the night away?

A: Dancing the night awayyyyy. I haven’t done it in a long time, but it needs to happen soon.

Q16: Who do you work with the most at the office?

A: Joanne. Because she is The Oracle who knows everything. She’s going on maternity leave in two, three months. I basically have to absorb all of her knowledge so that when she’s gone, between me and her maternity cover, we can keep the office running. No pressure...-it’s going to be fine. Yeah absolutely... I mean there is a wealth of knowledge within that woman so I’m hoping that just by being near her I can absorb her knowledge. – like a sponge. YEAH.

Q17: Can you speak any other languages?

A: Oh dear. I can read and write French, I can respond to emails in French but don’t ask me to have a conversation because I am rubbish at speaking it. I tried to learn a bit of Italian when I went to Rome a few years ago, but the only thing I can remember is how to order cocktails and ask where the bathroom is… -Just the basics yeah? That’s all you need to know! And I can’t remember any German whatsoever. Oh, I know how to say 'Happy New Year' in Chinese! –Oh, go on. “Gong Hey Fat Choy”. I’ll spell that for you. –THANK YOU! But yeah, that’s the extent of my knowledge.

That’s it for this week, I will be back all next week to get to know one of our other incredible personalities in the office!
