“It is in this way that disability and disabled students become a part of the full spectrum of diversity in our dance studios, our universities and our societies, rather than being isolated as an ‘issue’ or group to be taught outside the ‘regular’ curriculum.” Jurg Koch.
Our In Dialogue event, held on 25th October 2013, responded to a growing interest in how and where we provide best training for disabled students. Jürg Koch introduced his Universal Design of Instruction, developed as a result of his work with Candoco Dance Company and his vast experience in higher education in America. Instead of a disability specific approach of ‘adapting’ movement to suit individuals, this approach allows everyone in the class to work with the same principles and use them in a way that works for them and allows them to push themselves.
Following the presentation, the event opened to a broader panel discussion with a range of experts who, alongside delegates, contributed experiences, ideas and opinions.
